RF Online is a Sci-Fi themed MMORPG that was developed by CCR Inc. and published by Codemasters in February 2006. Originally it was buy to play and it had a monthly subscription and it has changed quite a few publishers since then. After shutting down it was picked up by its current publisher Red Fox Games in February 2016 and the game has a free to play model.

Starting off players have to pick between the three available race factions: the Bellato Union, the Holy Alliance Cora and the Accretia Empire. The four available classes are the Warrior, the Ranger, the Mystic and the Specialist. The game offers both Male and Female genders and the customization has some decent options to choose from considering how old it is.

There is an extensive tutorial that explains the basics of the game and there is an option to skip this if you want to. There are quests that move players from one area to the other in a very linear story progression and even though there is a leveling system the thing that sets RF Online apart is its PT points that are granted to players whenever they perform actions like attacking, using skills and so on. The PT points are used to increase stats and skills and they remind me of the proficiency skills that existed the first few expansions in World of Warcraft before being completely removed.

Aside from a few starting zones the rest of the game world is in constant PvP and that is one of the most sought out activity while playing. After reaching level 30, there is a PvP event called Chip Wars that takes place a few times per day and the objective is to destroy the other race’s control chip. It is an all-out three way free for all war!

RF Online is a game that has weathered many storms and is still standing strong. It has a nice PvE storyline and its PvP can be fun and exciting. As it is a free to play game nowadays, I would definitely recommend trying it out, especially if you missed the old school MMO’s of the 2000’s.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
