Following the path of Gon, Hunter X Hunter Online brings you along on his journey to follow in his father’s footsteps, and to becoming the greatest Hunter alive! With a well working turn based battle system, along with all of the lore from the manga series itself, Hunter X Hunter Online manages to make something pretty darn decent out of itself, especially considering it’s free to play status.

In game you will be tasked with completing various missions, each of which will earn you currency and gear, both of which will become vital to your eventual success. From instanced – lore based – missions, to daily quests to net you some rare loot, to community wide boss battles all the way to PvP content, Hunter X Hunter Online works had to deliver a free to play game that is actually worth playing.

One of the most important aspects of any team based rpg are of course the heroes themselves that will be made available to you for combat purposes. Hunter X Hunter Online deals with this in an interesting way. Rather than simply buying a new recruit, Hunter X Hunter Online has you pull a lever, and watch a virtual slot machine spin – three of the same faces, and you’ve gotten a new recruit. This system can be simultaneously rewarding and highly frustrating. Want that one hero is particular? Well, get ready to spin for him, over and over again. That being said, having unexpected party members appear can be not only an immense boon to your team, but can also supply you the player with a much needed break to the monotony that games of this genre can quickly begin to provide. Because of this double edged sword so to speak, the team customization options available to you can change at any time, deliver both dynamic game play, and some serious frustration in equal measure.

One thing I know I love in a game like this, where strategy is the brunt of the battle, is PvP. And again on this front, Hunter X Hunter Online does not disappoint. Complete with global leaderboards, Hunter X Hunter Online allows for players to pit their heroes against one another in ruthless combat, with positive results decided only by prevailing strategy and a cool head.

Hunter X Hunter Online provides fans of the series with an excellent look at the world from a brand new perspective, complete with all of the heroes, game modes, and challenges that one might expect to see from a game such as this. While the RNG aspects of the game can become a bit tedious, over all, this free to play title is something that I would suggest that no one miss, provided that they are a fan of the genre.

Good

  • In depth team customization
  • Varied missions and quests
  • PvP with leaderboards
  • Lore friendly and true to the Hunter X Hunter world

Bad

  • RNG can become a pain
  • Some of the mission seems repetitive

A writer of fiction and lover of all things fantastical, Matthew has spent many of his days immersed in one created world or another, be they an MMO, traditional video game, or a work of literary fiction. Having been both an avid writer and video game lover for his entire life, the next logical step seemed to be, you guess it, writing about video games. And so here he is, doing that.
