Echo of Soul is a Korean 3d MMORPG, developed by Nvius and published by Aeria Games in North America and Europe. It was released in May 2015 and is also available on Steam.

The story of the game has a generic concept that has been seen many times before. In this case, there is a World tree that evil forces want to destroy to unleash evil and the players as hero’s have the task to stop this from happening.

There are a total of five different classes available in Echo of Soul (Warrior, Rogue, Guardian, Sorceress and the Archer). Unfortunately, they are all gender locked and the customization options do not provide enough choices for players to make their characters truly stand out in the game.

The graphics of the game have an anime flair to them and they resemble other older MMO’s (like Lineage), but considering the year it was released, I feel that it could have been a bit better to help players with immersing into the world it has to offer.

The audio weaves in nicely while playing and the tutorial has subtle exclamation marks that help players start their adventuring. It was a really nice touch that all the NPC’s were voice acted for the introductory quests.

Echo of Soul offers quests, mounts, professions, pets, dungeons and many other features by using the same formula that many other MMO’s use. However, it brings its own twist by having a feature called Soul System. Players gather souls by killing mobs and bosses and they can use them to create powerful buffs and to craft special items.

The combat animations are interesting and the low global cooldowns don’t make the combat boring since they always have some skill to use, as a result.

On the 26th of October the game received a major update called Phoenix that offered many new features, including a new class (Paladin), a new level cap from 70 to 75 and a new leveling speed from 1 to 70.

Overall the game does not offer many new features in the large pool of free to play MMO’s that are available, but if you enjoy anime old school graphics and fun combat, without minding the well known grind that eastern games bring it can be an enjoyable experience. Echo of Soul is worth giving it a try and with this new update it is a good chance to do so.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
