Devilian Review

Devilian is an action RPG with MMO elements, or the other way around, developed by Bluehole Games and published by Trion Worlds in 2015. If you try to make a friend of yours understand the concept behind this game, you’ll probably call it the sweet spot between Diablo 3 and a classic MMORPG with fast paced gameplay. Devilian’s universe is heavily inspired by Tera, which is completely understandable since they’re developed by the same studio.

Starting off, you are set to choose your class with Berserker, Evoker, Shadowhunter, and Cannoneer being the options. Like any other ARPG, classes here are gender locked but, it implements a classic character creation with a few hairstyles, body sliders and a few other option which is a cool touch. Since Devilian is a relatively old game, it would be nice to have seen a new class all these years, but nothing like this ever happened. You can find new armor and weapons for your character, like in any other MMORPG (don’t expect unique builds based on gear like in Diablo or Path of Exile), as well as special collectible cards called Talismans that give you stat boosts and can be upgraded and evolved.

Gameplay-wise, Devilian has fast paced, solid battle system. What is sometimes a bit nerve-wrecking is the fact that most times you will be smashing 1-2 buttons instead of using some kind of combo or pattern of your skills. At difficult times, like big packs of mobs or bosses you can activate your Devilian form, which gives you new, powerful skills for a limited amount of time. The Devilian form lasts only a few seconds, making it a clunky mechanic since you, most times, just spam buttons in the meantime.

There’s no actual quest point in this game and that takes out all the fun in farming. You mostly auto-run to places hoping you won’t get aggro-ed by monsters, kill and then go talk again. Speaking of aggro, monsters slain are respawning extremely fast, making farming solo relatively hard, especially for ranged classes.

There’s a lot going on in aspect of PvP on Devilian. There is a variety of different activities ranging from basic 5v5 arenas to 20v20 battlegrounds. Matchmaking is a bit odd since there are not many people still playing the game and levels don’t seem to count when you are matched to a battle. Our advice is for you to reach max level before joining PvP to avoid losing your temper.

To sum up Devilian is a cool combination of two major genres, which creates high expectations. The game fails to fulfill most of them on the long run but overall is a must-play since it’s unique and fun to play.
