Xsyon is an MMORPG that was developed and published in March 2011 by Notorious Games. It was released on Steam in December 2014 and is still in Early Access. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting and the players must do everything they can in order to survive.

Starting out players create their own character and out of the usual options there is also an age bar that allows to play as an old or young character allowing for more roleplaying options before setting out.

After creating a character abilities have to be chosen like logging, hiding fishing etc. that influence what tools will be in your inventory when starting your adventure. The amount of abilities can become quite complex for beginner players and it is advisable to do some research before picking the abilities as the starter tools you will get are important for your experience. Another option is to simply restart new characters with different abilities in order to discover the usefulness of the tools by yourself.

The positive thing with Xsyon is that the game is a true sandbox game. As soon as you pick your starting location you have the freedom to do whatever you desire in a completely non-linear experience. Crafting is really interesting and the only limit to it is your own imagination. In this aspect of creating and crafting, the game is really impressive and enjoyable. Everything makes sense, for example if you would like to create rivers you need to have the “terraforming” skill.

When it was first released the game was buy to play and then had a monthly subscription that has been removed. Players are required to pay once and play forever. However, keep in mind that at the moment the team developing the game has been reduced to just one person which has taken it upon himself to improve everything and is communicating with the players. If you are a patient player I would suggest giving the game a try and if you do not enjoy it before reaching 2 hours of play you could always refund it.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
