World of Warplanes is a free-to-play Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO), Third Person Shooter (TPS) from Wargaming, the company that has given us titles like World of Tanks and World of Warships. It’s an arcade-like flight combat simulation game that gives players the opportunity to fly with some of the most famous airplanes from the golden era of aviation.

There are more than a hundred available aircraft models divided into four categories namely Fighters, Attack Aircrafts, Heavy Fighters and Multirole Fighters. Players can choose to fight for one of the seven available nations, Great Britain, China, U.S.S.R., France, Germany, Japan and U.S.A. When first starting the game, you are invited to complete a tutorial session which will explain all the very basics of flying and combat maneuvers.

No matter which Nation you will fight for, your first plane is a biplane, small but highly agile; with it you will have to win a number of games that will reward you with experience and currency in order to be able to buy a better aircraft. In fact, every “class” is split in up to ten tiers; as you reach higher tiers you gain access to better aircrafts.

World of Warplanes features a sufficient number of maps where winning conditions vary, from eliminating your enemies in the air, to destroying a certain number of ground forces. One thing that must be noted is that this is not a flight simulator; developers have chosen a more arcade-like approach with emphasis on ease of plane handling and fast-paced action. Graphics are good with detailed 3D models and nice visual and sound effects but, when compared to other modern titles, they look a little old, even in the highest available analysis.

World of Warplanes is a nice game that manages to present a casual and less hardcore take on the flight simulator genre; it doesn’t impress, but should you choose to give it a try, it will keep you company for many entertaining hours!

It was back at 1996 when Theodoros bought his first Personal Computer and with it a copy of Shogun : Total War. That was the beginning of many sleepless nights of exploring the fantastic world of gaming. He calls himself an “expert” defender and that’s his favorite gameplay style but he will not hesitate to grab a shield and go forth to protect his team as a tank. So next time you adventure in Azeroth and see a shield bearing cow named Klaras, you have found our guy! He is also a great fan of Role Playing Games. From Icewind Dale to Neverwinter Nights and Skyrim, you name it, he has played it all! He is not your average casual gamer, he is a dedicated fan!
