Swordsman is a MMORPG that was developed and published by Perfect World Entertainment in July 2014. The game is based on a novel named “The Smiling, Proud Wanderer” by Louis Cha and it describes the adventures of wandering martial artists. Starting off, the character creation is nicely done and it offers just the right amount of customization options that are rich and easy to use.

Players start as a white belt martial artist and they have some basic skills. At level twenty those skills are completely changed for another loadout all together. Unfortunately there is lack of information and it would be nice to have more things explained to you when starting out. It is recommended to search the internet for explanations on new systems, like the crafting system that is introduced at level thirty. Quests are not simple kill and collect quests and if you get lost there are highlighted words that if pressed will take your character were he needs to be.

The graphics of the game have a nice style with nice vibrant colours and the Ancient Chinese architecture is nicely crafted. However, they are dated compared to other games of the same genre. This impressive environment manages to captivate the sense of immersion that these kind of games should invoke whilst playing them. This is further achieved by the impressive traditional Chinese soundtrack that adds up to the feeling of epicness.

Swordsman is a game that is unique and has a niche that would appeal to a specific type of player in the west. The game is free to play and the in game shop is not too intrusive. So if you are a fan of eastern movies, traditions and architecture I would definitely suggest giving it a try.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
