Salem is a free-to-play Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) from Mortal Moments. It is set in a 17th century New World and it features an open world where everything can and must be crafted by players.
In the beginning, you find yourself at a port waiting for your ship to Americas. This is the time to customize your character; do not expect a lot of options, the game leave things as simple as possible. When you arrive at your destination there is a tutorial which will guide you through the basics; do not skip it, Salem is a rather complicated game in terms of skills and professions with tons of things to do and this session is extremely helpful.
This is a Java game meaning that you don’t need a very powerful rig to enjoy it; on the other hand however, the graphics, although 3D, are quite simple with low-detailed models. Once you get used to that you will truly enjoy the well-designed environments and the freedom that a sandbox game offers. You can build a home almost anywhere you wish, in a secluded corner of the world or you can gather your friends and together build a small settlement!
Everything in Salem can and must be crafted; want to make a fishing raft? You must gather all the materials needed and you must have knowledge of how to build it! As you interact with your surroundings you will see that some items have the “study” inscription, meaning that once collected they will “teach” you something new. There are some professions more suited for certain tasks, for example a Gardener will be better in planting a tree than an Alchemist! Salem’s crafting system is overwhelming at times and requires many hours of study and testing to reach a certain level of knowledge but it’s very satisfying in the same time!
Finally, for PVP enthusiasts, Salem has something new to offer; once in the open world you can kill animals or hunt down other players but keep in mind that PVP death is permanent and the criminal leaves clues that can be followed! At some point one must answer for their crimes!
Salem is one of these titles that give players the chance to enjoy a truly open-world experience where they must learn to survive by using their wits and ingenuity; if the simple graphics don’t bother you, this is a MMORPG you will fall in love with!
