Royal Quest is a MMORPG that was developed by Katauri Interactive and was Publisehd by 1C Online Games Ltd in May 2015. The game takes place in the fantasy world of Aura were players are heroes called to action by the King.

Before any of this action takes place players have to pick one of the available classes: Warrior, Archer, Rogue and Mage. At level 20 there are further class advancements to choose from. Unfortunately there aren’t many options in the character creation process apart from some limited options for each category. Following that is a short tutorial that helps get around and learn the basics of movement and combat. Interestingly enough, movement is done by point and clicking and there is no option to use the usual directional keys (W,S,A,D) that is present in the majority of MMORPG’s.

Even though the graphics are old school and colourful, Royal Quest delivers the same classic systems sprinkled in when it comes to the advancement of quests, the combat, the item upgrades, the mounts and many more. The PvP aspect has a heavier focus with a variety of Arenas, Battlegrounds and Castle Sieges. Another drawback that I found was the fact that while questing some areas allow PvP and there is a chance for other players to kill you while you are completing your quests. However, during questing in Royal Quest this happened only if you provoked others somehow, so it did not turn out that bad as in other games.

Finally, as this is a free to play game there is an in game store present that offers items for real money and there is also a subscription available. A positive point here is the fact that the items sold provided experience boosts and no stat boosting to give players an edge. All in all Royal Quest provides a lot of nostalgia that is worth exploring. However the presence of many similar MMORPG’s out there does not make it stand out from the rest. At the end of the day I would say it is a matter of preference.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
