Realm of the Mad God is a free-to-Play, Roguelike MMO shooter that puts emphasis on fast-paced, bullet hell action. It is set in a quirky fantasy universe. It was created by Wild Shadow Studios and Spry Fox and it’s currently published by Deca Games.

The visual presentation of the game is poor to say the least. Its pixelated, isometric, 2D graphics make it one of the most horrid titles to have ever populated the landscape of modern gaming. The character animations barely exist, while the dreadful spell effects are often differentiated solely by color. The sound matches the visuals perfectly.

The players move by using the WASD keys while aiming and shooting with the mouse. After selecting a class, they are conveyed the essential task of traversing the map, going mostly inwards, while slaughtering hordes of enemies, gaining loot experience, and fame. This simple progressions system might sound quite underwhelming, but is, in truth, one of the selling points of the game. It is notably well paced and quite addictive.

However, it is surely the addition of Permadeath that makes the game stand out of the crowd. When you die (that is, quite often) you lose both your character and their items. It is crucial to underline how Permadeath doesn’t impact death exclusively, but filters down the entire gaming experience, because the lingering threat of dying instills even the most mundane scenario with a sense of danger and puts emphasis on skill and strategy.

The entire experience is also rather grindy. In fact, the Mostly Positive Steam reviews are due to players finding the grind-death cycle stimulating and rewarding. Grind, however, doesn’t come at the price of skills, as the gameplay requires quite a lot of quick reflexes and practice to handle.

It’s mandatory to mention that the title is Pay-to-Win. In fact, you can buy even the most powerful gear in the in-game cash shop. Furthermore, pets, which are an end-game must, are difficult to progress without actually investing money.
