Rakion is a free-to-play MMORPG developed by NetCraft and published by Softnyx in late 2005. Even though this game is a bit old and could be described as outdated, its PvP battle system is still so well crafted that can compete with all those high-end PvP oriented MMORPG’s.
In Rakion you can choose a character among 5 classes, which have a gender system with male characters being Swordsmen or Blacksmiths, female ones being Archers and Ninjas, while Mages can be both. If you are a min-maxing kind of player you should consider finding a “meta sheet” since all those classes have advantages and counters over one another, so you may have a hard time if your class is an underrated one in PvP.
There are 7 modes in Rakion, 6 of which are PvP oriented as everyone would expect. If you are a PvE player then you will get bored easily, since its leveling up and grinding system isn’t so well crafted as its PvP and lacks storyline and plot meaning. The game itself though delivers an oldschool feeling, reminding us of Lineage or WoW on their first years.
In battles, pure battling skills and smashing buttons is not enough. While your enemy attacks you have to plan your moves carefully as you can block, guard and break his armor with specific combos. Rakion is much more strategic than it seems, even though having strategic PvP battles doesn’t always mean a good experience.
What’s impressive about the game is its Cell Summoning system, which lets you summon up to three creatures to fight alongside you, leveling up and getting stronger with you too.
Here’s where the first massive problems begin. Rakion is heavily pay-to-win with powerful gear pieces and cells being able to be purchased so that you can get strong pretty early. This creates lots of balance problems with many veterans being able to one-shot you with the use of purchased cells.
Overall, Rakion is a very good PvP experience if you don’t mind giving strategy planning a whirl. If you are a PvE player though you will easily get bored as it lacks most of PvE content that might get you hooked. Mostly recommended for players that want to sharpen their PvP skills and try planning their battles in real time.
