LuckCatchers is a game heavily inspired by the MMORPGs of old, such as EvE Online or Ultima. In this fully persistent sandbox world you are an airship captain tasked with one motivation – to do whatever the heck you want! It’s a beautiful thing in an MMORPG to be given the tools to make the game great yourself, and LuckCatchers does a remarkably fine job doing just that. From the player based economy, to the guild territory system, to its interesting PvE and PvP combat systems, LuckCatchers manages to hit the mark on most of what it tries to do.

As a budding airship captain, you are set forth head first into a world set on the precipice of ultimate destruction. In this steampunk universe of airships and magic, you are able to do just about anything in order to get an edge over the competition. Whether you’re interested in accumulating vast sums of silver and gold through the art of the trade, gathering the materials required to create those powerful tradeable items, or being the one to put the item together yourself – you will be able to find a community who values the work that you put in to your craft, and who will compensate you in turn for your troubles.

One of the finer points of any Sandbox MMORPG is territory control. There’s no finer feeling in the world of online video games than knowing that you and your guild have won something real. You haven’t just leveled up, or gotten a shiny new item. No, you’ve gained control. Control over a small portion of skies of at first, to be sure, but that small parcel can always grow larger. And within its growing borders so to can your organization grow, and begin to thrive. From industrial plants building engines and ammunition, to extraction sites pulling great mounds of stone and ore from deep below the surface of the earth, the options on how one might decide to run their own operation are vast, and entirely open ended.

Combat is of course an essential aspect of any Sandbox MMORPG, and LuckCatchers does not stray far from the pack in this regard. Similar to other ship combat games such a EvE Online, LuckCatchers has its players rely more heavily on their game and tactical knowledge, rather than their twitch reflexes or mouse aim. This opens up combat in LuckCatchers to players who may not otherwise feel comfortable in similar Sandbox MMORPGs. This game is of course a full loot PvP game however, so players unwilling to lose their cargo and gear may very well want to tread carefully when exploring the skies. Form hunting dragons, to hunting players, to hunting nothing at all, LuckCatchers manages to cater nicely to just about anyone’s prefered play style.

The real watermark of a good Sandbox game is options, and LuckCatchers has ‘em. Whether you want to be a dread pirate, known across the skies for your treachery – or the greatest airship builder in the world. The choice is only yours. With the power to command the skies, who will you be, in LuckCatchers?

A writer of fiction and lover of all things fantastical, Matthew has spent many of his days immersed in one created world or another, be they an MMO, traditional video game, or a work of literary fiction. Having been both an avid writer and video game lover for his entire life, the next logical step seemed to be, you guess it, writing about video games. And so here he is, doing that.
