Kal Online is a MMORPG that was developed and published by Inixsoft in February 2004. When starting out players get the chance to pick one of four classes: the Knight, the Magician, the Archer and the Thief. There are the usual customization options but unfortunately the gender of these characters is locked. However, there is considerable depth with over 32 job options for players to explore and master. An interesting feature of the game is the ability for players to transform into mythical creatures that boost their combat stats.

Similar to other video games of this genre Kal Online has a main story, side quests as well as daily quests. These can become repetitive after a while and they do not provide the immersion required to keep you playing for a long period of time. Upon reaching level 15 you receive an egg that can be hatched when it reaches grade eleven, by gaining experience. An item that is available in game is the Assassin Mask and if you equip it you can go around and kill other players. The downside is that there are a lot of high level players that go around killing lower level characters and when you are killed you lose experience. This can become quite annoying and usually the best thing to do is log out and continue playing later, hoping that they will have left your character alone.

Unfortunately, another downside is the online store that requires real money in order to buy items that give various boosts. The graphics of the game have not been updated and have that 2004 look and the animations feel a bit mechanical and wonky.

Kal Online is a game that has been around for a very long time but I would only recommend it if you have been feeling nostalgia for the game, or if you have some friends with you to tag along. If you like the graphics that the first mmo’s had around the 2000’s you could give it a try for a week or two.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
