Heroes of Newerth Review

Heroes of Newerth is a well acclaimed free to play 3D MOBA game, by S2 Games. As a tower defense game, similar to Defence of the Ancients (DotA), the player’s goal is to destroy the opposing team’s tower while protecting their own. Battles are fought between two teams; the “Legion” and the “Hellbourne”, of up to five players, who can select their heroes from an extended pool of over 140 different characters and various items.

This is one of the main points that Heroes of Newerth clearly shows its deep focus and attention to strategic and tactical detail, as mastering the art of controlling various characters and managing the additional consequences of each hero’s equipped weapons and items on the team’s mix and effectiveness, is essential in order to become a great and highly competitive player. Heroes gain experience and level-up during play, therefore their skills can be further upgraded and become more powerful. Along with the multiple game modes, a new quest system, called “The War Effort” has been recently made available to all players, rewarding them for completing daily quests, providing Reputation points and adding additional replay-ability value. Reputation points earned can be used to unlock chests or satchels that contain special and prestigious items. In case you manage to climb up to the top ranks of the leaderboard, you will be greatly awarded with unique rewards.

Featuring a steep learning curve but strong presentation and high production values, Heroes of Newerth will most certainly win your attention, in case you have some serious time to invest. Although it may not appeal to the more casual-gaming audience, it incorporates some of the finest and highly competitive team-based mechanics and functions seen in the genre and has a great tactical design leaving adequate room for a deeply strategic play.
