God Wars Review

God Wars is a Chinese browser MMO based on a the well known game model most players are familiar with. It defines itself as “western fantasy”, but it does have a very eastern vibe to it. These games have largely the same kind of gameplay and seem to be void of any interesting features or innovation. They are, in fact, shamelessly, boring, and bland.

You have a hub world and external zones which you traverse with you party until you encounter a group of mobs you can engage. The combat is completely automated: all the characters carry out a series of moves without any player input and the combat is won by the team with better stats.

The isometric camera while exploring the map and the 2D sprites-based combat might be vaguely reminiscent of the first Heroes of Might and Magic games, but when one realizes that the game plays itself, and that it is, in fact, not a game but a glorified clicker almost completely lacking gameplay, one understands that comparisons with the good gaming franchises of the past are totally out of place.

To be clear, the game looks quite well and both the drawings and the animations are quite nice. The sound is also decent. It’s a pity that artistic and musical talent should go wasted for such a title.

It also features a city building mechanic, in which you upgrade your hub in order to acquire more power, as well as mounts, in-game events and more.

The game also seems to receive frequent updates featuring new events and content. The site itself, however, might be pleasing at first glance, but is, in truth, a complete mess riddled with poor translations, bad media, atrocious writing, and all the usual characteristics of Chinese game development.

It doesn’t help that the names of some game mechanics have been definitely lost in translation. For instance, a counter system, in which some races counter some others, has been called “race suppression”. Charming…

It is his strongly held belief that games require a large amount of attention and intelligent analysis if they want to mature and evolve, reaching the level of other cultural products. He is deeply fascinated by the potential of MMOs, RPGs, Indie games, as well as Esports.
