Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – First Assault Online, also abbreviated as First Assault, is a free-to-play online first person shooter, developed by Neople and published by Nexon in July 2016. The game is set in the dystopian Cyberpunk genre that was inspired by the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series.

The players have the opportunity to pick one of the iconic operatives from Section 9 or some of the new ones like: Batou, Motoko, Ishikawa, Saito, Togusa, Paz, Maven and Borma. Each one of the operatives brings their own distinct skills. This is particularly important as there is a Skill Sync mechanic that allows players to share certain of their abilities.

In order to not have any awkward scenarios occurring, were for example an enemy Batou would be shooting an ally Batou, the game shows the enemy team as generic thugs.

Another one of the strong points of the game is the fact that they used the original English voice actors to voice it, so during play there is a sense of familiarity for the fans of Ghost in the Shell.

First Assault offers intense PvP action in four available game modes: Ghost Assault, Team Deathmatch, Terminal Conquest and Demolition.

In order to have something that will make players continue playing there are a couple of interesting level progression systems offered. Whenever new levels are achieved there are milestone rewards such as rank symbol changes, new cyberbrain sockets and with each level up the players are awarded with GP, which is the in-game currency.

The second progression system offers TP points after each match that can be used to unlock items, which can then be purchased using GP points to add them permanently to a player’s inventory.

Even though it has some issues, First assault is worth your time to try it out, especially if you are a fan of the Ghost in the Shell series. So try it out before it completely shuts down on the 6th of December 2017.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
