Fantasy Tales Online is a MMORPG that was developed and published by Cold Tea Studio since April 2015 and it is currently still in Early Access. It features 2d 16 bit graphics and is a nice trip down memory lane to players that grew up playing classic RPG games like the first few Final Fantasy games and so on.

There are three options to choose from when starting the game and picking a class. These are the Assassin, the Brute and the Medic. There aren’t many options to customize your character apart from some hairstyle options, but while playing the game there is a barber and also the armor and gear can give a sense of uniqueness and personalization.

The game starts in a small town called Bluevale and like other theme parked MMORPG’s the locals have quests that require completion and thus the adventure begins. The quest types are the usual kill and collect ones, plus a few more investigative ones like finding a stolen painting. The character movement and the use of skills is done by using the W,A,S,D keys the attack is done using the left mouse button and the other skills are used from the hotbar. This sense of familiarity is a positive feeling because it allows for players to jump right into the game and start having fun on the get go.

Another aspect that is truly entertaining is the fact that the dungeons are randomly-generated and every time a player enters them the layout changes. This gives an interesting twist to the typical dungeons as Fantasy Tales Online won’t allow players to memorize or get bored of running the same dungeon multiple times.

Overall the game requires more polishing so the fact that it is still in Early Access leaves a sense of optimism that it will improve even more in the future. For players that loved playing classic RPG’s in 16 bit graphics and others that would be interested in giving this game a try, I truly recommend it as it does hit some good notes.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
