Creativerse is a free to play MMORPG builder game that was developed and published by Playful Corporation in August 2014 on Steam with an Early Access status. In May 2017 it was officially released and it is free to play. When starting the game the inspiration and influences remind of Minecraft. However apart from the many similarities there are also quite a few visual differences and mechanics like crafting swords only.

Having followed and played Minecraft since its beta I can safely say that Creativerse provided a nice more polished look to the original Minecraft, with a nice twist to how the main character looks and a very interesting and vibrant crafting system. The crafting recipes are nicely made and explain all the items players need to find as well as how they can be acquired, in order to create what they are looking for.

When the game was officially out of early access a store was added that provides micro-transactions. By paying real life money players gain the in game equivalent currency which is called Mojo and with them you can buy bundles with starter items, new blocks and other items. These perks have been a bit of a negative point as it seems that the items available as well as some events are catered towards promoting the buying of loot boxes in the store.

Overall the game is one of the better Minecraft clones I have played. It has a lot of conveniences but if you are playing free to play you might have a hard time enjoying it as much. The Pro DLC allows players to set monsters to peaceful and give items like the Touchstone which allows players to teleport to it wherever it is placed. I would recommend trying it out as a free to play game and if you find it interesting then be prepared to spend some cash in the store.

Growing up I had the luck to encounter the art of video games at a very young age in South Africa in 1990. I was captivated from the first moment I played video games from the educational math games at school to the purely entertaining video games at home. This love cultivated in studying Audio and Visual Arts, where I created the interactive audiovisual play in the form of a video game titled "The Life of Death". Over the last few years I have also been a videogame journalist as a hobby. Recently, I completed my Postgraduate studies in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. My goal is to get into the video games industry and be a part of the creation process of video games.
