What is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a crypto wallet & gateway to blockchain apps. It is available as a browser extension and as a mobile app. You can use it to buy, store, send and swap tokens.
MetaMask equips you with a key vault, secure login, token wallet, and token exchange—everything you need to manage your digital assets. It provides the simplest yet most secure way to connect to blockchain-based applications. You are always in control when interacting on the new decentralized web. MetaMask generates passwords and keys on your device, so only you have access to your accounts and data. You always choose what to share and what to keep private. More information on MetaMask can be found here.
What is Polygon?
Polygon is a protocol and a framework for building and connecting Ethereum-compatible blockchain networks. In order to use the Polygon network you must spend its native token MATIC for transaction fees. Many users enjoy using Polygon for its extremely low gas fees, with transaction fees cheaper than $0.001 and rapid transaction speeds. More information on the MATIC token can be found here.
In this guide, we will show you how to setup Metamask for Polygon main network.
Install the Metamask Extension from the Store
Visit the browser extension marketplace and download the MetaMask extension.
Create a MetaMask Wallet or Import One
We’d suggest creating a new one if you haven’t done so.
Click import wallet if you have an existing wallet.
Setup your password and secret recovery phrase somewhere safe.
Setup MetaMask to connect to Polygon Network
Switch the connected blockchain by clicking on the tab saying Main Ethereum Network, we need to add the Polygon network.
Scroll down until you find Custom RPC.
Enter in the Polygon mainnet settings as follows:
- Network Name: Polygon Mainnet
- New RPC URL: https://polygon-rpc.com ( or https://rpc-mainnet.matic.network or https://rpc-mainnet.maticvigil.com or https://rpc-mainnet.matic.quiknode.pro )
- ChainID: 137
- Symbol: MATIC
- Block Explorer URL: https://polygonscan.com/
Click Save.
You have now connected to the Polygon mainnet with your MetaMask wallet. You can now close the dialog.
As mentioned in the beginning, transactions on the Polygon network require its native token MATIC which will be used as gas fees.
One way to get MATIC tokens is by purchasing them from a centralized exchange such as Binance or Crypto.com and then transfer them to your MetaMask wallet. A quick guide on how to do so can be found below.
