Blockchain games to look out for this fall

Since its inception in the late 2000s, online gaming has evolved into a mainstay of the video game business, and one of the most lucrative sectors of the entertainment industry. To bring new possibilities to hardcore games and even casual players all across the world, developers are now focusing on unique gameplay and engaging experiences, making use of the latest technologies available.

And one of the most exciting technological advancements in recent years, blockchains have already made their way into the video game industry, with crypto games introducing a brand new way of playing video games. Providing decentralized environments in which players are allowed to manage every part of the gaming experience, including content monetization and governance decisions, blockchain games are also introducing interactive experiences and innovative gameplay that rewards players’ effort and creativity.

Created in the late 2000s to serve as public ledgers for digital currencies and solve the double-spending problem most cryptocurrencies faced at that time, blockchains are decentralized structures containing sequences of records, cryptographic hashes, and transaction data, being virtually unhackable. Therefore, video game developers and publishers became able to provide players with total control over the gaming experience, from creation rights to play-to-earn features. Through these features, and also through content monetization and cross-game interoperability, gamers can finally be rewarded for the time invested into gaming.

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, are one of the numerous instruments that are enabling blockchains and cryptocurrencies to achieve new heights, but they also play a key part in the popularization of blockchain games. As smart contracts representing unique digital items on a blockchain, NFTs provide proof of ownership of everything created in blockchain games, thus allowing players to earn money and profit for the content they create, such as characters, items, scenery objects, and even virtual worlds.

As blockchain technologies continuously improve and the players’ demand for new blockchain games increases, several titles are being released with more intricate and complex gameplay and mechanics, pushing the boundaries for the whole genre. The following titles are some of the most ingenious blockchain games available, featuring exciting themes and incredible gameplay.

Axie Infinity

Undoubtedly the most popular blockchain game in recent months, with an average 725,000 active users per month, Axie Infinity is the perfect game for fans of Pokémon-inspired adventures. In this game, players can collect and raise creatures called Axies, pit them in battles against other users, and even build worlds for their Axies.

Based on the Ethereum blockchain, the game requires players to acquire at least three Axies before playing, which can be done via the official marketplace, where gamers can also purchase lands to build worlds, and items to breed and increase Axies’ attributes. Even though the game is still in early access, it has already generated more than $2.2 billion in transactions.

The Sandbox

Also based on the Ethereum blockchain, The Sandbox is an open-world adventure game developed by Animoca Brands that features a decentralized, revolving metaverse, in which players are allowed to build virtual worlds, create interactive adventures, design characters, items and various Voxel-based objects, join each other’s games and adventures, and even monetize all content created.

The Sandbox also features its own utility tokens and a cryptocurrency called SAND. With it, gamers can buy and sell assets such as character equipment and scenery objects, purchase LANDs, the game’s building lots, and also to visit other users’ worlds and join their adventures. The developers recently announced a new milestone for the game, with a $93 million investment round led by Softbank, a Japanese multinational conglomerate.

Upland

With more than 140,000 users in the last month, Upland has been ranked among the most popular blockchain games for quite some time. Based on the EOS blockchain, the game allows players to buy, sell, and trade virtual properties mapped to real-world addresses – some kind of “Monopoly meets NFTs”.

Players can become digital land owners, flip properties for profit, and run virtual businesses to earn UPX, the game’s own cryptocurrency, and convert their gains into fiat currencies. With a brand new NFT metaverse, and quickly becoming one of the most dynamic blockchain-based economies, Upland was even featured on Forbes and Vice magazines and has partnered with EOS Authority and ClimateCare to take action on blockchain sustainability.

Farmer’s World

Labeled by its developers as the first farming game to function on a blockchain platform, Farmer’s World is a farming simulation game with one of the largest communities among blockchain games, with over 150,000 players from all over the world. The game is based on WAX, a carbon neutral blockchain that runs on a proof-of-stake system.

In this game, players must buy land to build huge farms, gather and manage resources and assets, use suitable tools to farm different crops, and enjoy fascinating experiences of a farmer working in the game’s revolving metaverse.
